Johnstown, Pa. –
The Johnstown Chiefs, ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the AHL’s Lake Erie Monsters and Syracuse Crunch, announced today that they have re-signed forward Mike Sgroi.

“We’re pleased to have Mike back for this season. He’s a proven physical presence on the ice who can also contribute offensively. It’s going to be great to have a fan favorite return that will undoubtedly provide energy and excitement,” said Chiefs Vice President and General Manager Bill Bredin.

Sgroi, 30, was acquired on January 8, 2008 via a trade with Pensacola in a deal that sent rookie forward Mike Cohen to the Ice Pilots. Sgroi had an immediate impact as he picked up one goal and two assists for the Chiefs in his debut on January 12 against Reading. He would finish the regular season on a goal-scoring surge which saw him tally six times, including a hat trick against Cincinnati on March 29. In all, Sgroi had 25 points (13G, 12A) and a team-high 192 penalty minutes in 27 games with Johnstown.

The 6’5, 230-pound forward from Toronto, Ontario is currently recovering from a broken hand that he suffered while at training camp with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs open their 2008-09 home schedule on Saturday, October 18 at 7:05 against the Wheeling Nailers, and you won’t want to miss a minute of the action.
